CPR skills, particularly chest compressions, need to be practiced and evaluated to ensure that high-quality CPR is delivered when it is needed in an emergency. Amid COVID-19 precautions, the American Heart Association (AHA) rightfully continues to require skill evaluations using an instrumented manikin that provides feedback on the participant’s performance of chest compressions. Certification in all AHA disciplines requires that the participant successfully complete this skills component.
How can we limit the risk of COVID-19 transmission while upholding AHA quality metrics?
Code One got to work on this process in mid-March as the threat of a global shutdown was still looming. We met with our contacts at the AHA and presented our plan for the safe delivery of training through a distance learning platform. Our proposal was ultimately approved granting healthcare professionals across the country with safe, contactless skill sessions for CPR credentialing.
Skill sessions are conducted at Code One Training Centers so participants have access to the required equipment. We require that you wear a mask or face covering to the session and be free of COVID-19 symptoms for at least 7 days.
Upon arrival to the building, dial into our conference line and your instructor will guide you through getting into the training center – the session is contactless so there will be no staff or other students present during your appointment.
Once inside, you’ll meet with your instructor on video conference. They will have you apply gloves and wipe down your manikins with a disinfectant wipe. You’ll perform your skills and wipe down the manikins once more before leaving.
Your instructor will issue an AHA eCard certification to your email upon successful completion.
